Dreaming about spiders
Spiders sit at an unusual crossing point: fear, patience, craft, and mothers. Whether you dream of the spider or the web changes the reading completely.
The short answer
Spider dreams divide cleanly. If the spider is the focus, the dream is usually about a watchful presence — something small that you cannot ignore, often a person. If the web is the focus, it is about entanglement: an obligation, a job, a family structure you are caught in and helped to build.
Your dream was more than one symbol. Describe what actually happened and get a written interpretation of the whole thing — the symbols that mattered, what it seems to be working through, and what to sit with.

The psychological reading
The everyday layer is fear, and it is worth clearing first. Arachnophobia is common enough that a spider is simply the standard available image for disproportionate dread — a small threat with an outsized reaction, which is exactly the emotional shape of anxiety itself. People with the phobia dream spiders after stressful days without any deeper content required.
The more interesting readings come from what spiders do. They spin, they wait, and they catch. The spinning associates spiders with craft, patience and long unglamorous work — dreams of a spider working are notably common in people building something slow. The waiting associates them with a controlling presence, someone at the centre of a structure who does not need to move because everything comes to them. The catching gives you the trap.
Then there is the maternal reading, which is old and hard to dislodge. Spiders are near-universally coded feminine in symbolic traditions, and modern interpretation — helped along by artists like Louise Bourgeois, whose vast spider sculptures are explicitly portraits of her mother — reads the giant spider as a maternal figure who is protective and devouring at once. It is a strong reading and it is not always right; it is worth testing against the actual dream rather than assumed.
Folk and cultural readings
Spiders come out well in a surprising number of traditions. In British folk belief the tiny money spider brings wealth and must not be killed, and the broader European rule against killing a house spider is widespread enough to be a genuine cultural universal in that region. In West African and Caribbean tradition, Anansi is a spider trickster who owns the stories themselves — clever, self-interested, and the reason tales get told. Among the Diné (Navajo), Spider Woman teaches weaving, which places the spider at the origin of craft and culture rather than at the edge of it.
The darker strand is also old. In Greek myth Arachne is a weaver who out-weaves a goddess and is turned into a spider for it, which encodes the spider as punished excellence. Christian-influenced folk readings of the web as a snare for the unwary follow the same suspicion.
If you dream of a spider in the corner of the room minding its own business, most traditions on earth would tell you to leave it there.
What the common variations mean
A spider in your bed
Proximity is the meaning. Something you regard as a small threat has got into the one place that is supposed to be safe — often a person, often family.
A giant spider
Scale is emotional, not literal. Giant spiders are the classic image of a presence that is not physically dangerous but dominates a room.
Webs everywhere
The entanglement dream. Usually obligations, commitments or a household system you helped build and cannot now walk through freely.
Being bitten
A specific incident rather than a general dread. Similar logic to a snake bite, on a smaller scale — a small harm from a small source that hurt more than it should have.
Spiders pouring from a wall or a crack
Almost always the anxiety version: one worry that turned out to be many, arriving faster than you can deal with them.
Questions to sit with
- Was the spider working, waiting, or coming toward you?
- Who in your life sits at the centre of a structure you are inside?
- Did you kill it? What did that feel like?
Common questions
Does a spider dream mean someone is manipulating me?
It can, but the web version is far more often about a structure than a villain — obligations you agreed to, not traps someone laid.
Why are the spiders always huge?
Dream scale follows feeling, not size. A giant spider is generally a small real thing with a large emotional footprint.
Is dreaming of spiders bad luck?
Most traditions say the opposite. Money spiders, house spiders and weavers are widely read as good fortune, craft and story.
