The psychological reading
Clothes are role. They tell people what you do, what class you belong to, how seriously to take you, and how close they may come. To be without them in public is to be seen as yourself with none of that scaffolding, which is exactly the feeling of being new somewhere, or being promoted past your evidence, or having said something honest in a room that was expecting a performance.
The single most useful detail is the reaction of the crowd. In a large proportion of these dreams — probably most — nobody notices, and that version usually belongs to people whose fear of exposure is much larger than their actual exposure. If the crowd does notice and does not care, the dream tends to arrive after a real disclosure that went better than expected. If the crowd is hostile, that is worth taking more seriously as a read on an actual environment.
Location does the rest. Naked at work is competence and status. Naked at school, in a building you left decades ago, is almost always about being evaluated again as an adult and reaching for the oldest available image of it — the same mechanism behind dreaming you are late for an exam. Naked in front of family is intimacy and shame, and it is usually the least comfortable version.
Partial dress is its own signal: half-dressed dreams tend to accompany situations where you have chosen to reveal some things and are worried about the rest.
Folk and cultural readings
The oldest layer here is not embarrassment, it is disgrace. Nakedness in Genesis is the moment self-consciousness begins, and shame arrives with knowledge. That story sits underneath the whole Western experience of this dream, which is why it feels moral as well as awkward.
Classical dream interpretation was less prudish and more transactional. Artemidorus read nakedness contextually: shameful in some situations, and in others — at a festival, in a bath house — completely unremarkable and even fortunate, on the reasoning that a person with nothing to hide has nothing to lose. Several folk traditions preserve a version of this, reading the dream as a coming loss of property or standing rather than of dignity.
The Emperor's New Clothes deserves a mention because it inverts the dream: everyone is complicit in a fiction, and the exposure is a public good. People in institutions dream a lot of this version.
